Notable New Releases 7.27.10 (Best Coast, Menomena, Futurebirds, and More)

Posted by Steven

Best Coast – Crazy For You

Easily one of our most anticipated records of the year, after several listens Crazy For You lives up to the hype.  Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno make it sound so easy on their debut LP, blending 60′s girl-group harmonies with 90′s alt-rock riffs.  Cosentino’s simple lyrics, which occasionally border on silly, offer an earnest yet self-assured perspective on yearning and heartache.

Best Coast – “Boyfriend”

Best Coast – “When I’m With You”

Buy at Mexican Summer

Menomena – Mines

The exact opposite of the Best Coast record.  A challenging but ultimately rewarding listen, Mines finds the Portland experimental-rockers at their most ambitious.  The record is littered with inventive production and masterful musicianship, particularly on the sprawling, Weekend Mixed “TAOS” and the slow burning “Tithe.”

Menomena – “TAOS”

Buy at Barsuk

Futurebirds – Hampton’s Lullaby

This is what alt-country in 2010 should sound like, an eclectic mix of pedal steel, indie pop melodies, and four-part harmonies.

Futurebirds – “Johnny Utah”

Buy at Amazon via Autumn Tone

Seu Jorge and Almaz – S/T

No Bowie covers, but this time around we get the Brazilian singer/actor’s take on classics from Michael Jackson and Kraftwerk, among others.  This is Jorge’s first album with his newly formed band, Almaz.

Seu Jorge and Almaz – “Everybody Loves The Sunshine”

Buy at Now Again

Jaill – That’s How We Burn

Genuine rock n’ rollers from Milwaukee release their sure-to-be-breakout LP, their first on Sub Pop.

Jaill – “The Stroller”

Buy at Sub Pop

Miniature Tigers – Fortress

This Arizona/Brooklyn quartet’s second album features production from Chris Chu of The Morning Benders and Neon Indian, who produced the XMU favorite and lead single, “Gold Skull.”

Miniature Tigers – “Gold Skull”

Miniature Tigers – “Bullfighter Jacket”

Buy at Modern Art Records

Best Coast – “Our Deal” (Stream)

Posted by Steven

Pairing the budding indie darling that is Beth Cosentino with video games is quite the head scratcher, but Best Coast’s new track, “Our Deal,” premiered on the Bright Falls web series earlier this week.  The fantastic new track will also appear on Best Coast’s upcoming debut LP, which I didn’t need to be any more excited for.

Best Coast – “When I’m With You” (Video)

Posted by Steven

We’re finally getting a video for one of our favorites songs of the last six months, and it doesn’t disappoint.  Set in sunny Venice Beach, we get cameos from Ronald McDonald(sorta), In-N-Out Burger, and obviously a cat.  What else could we ask for?  Can’t wait for that LP.

SXSW Retrospective – Day 5

Posted by Steven

SXSW added Film and Interactive conferences to the yearly festival in 1994, attracting the best and brightest in web technology and filmmaking.  The interactive portion focuses on emerging technologies, and features panels on everything from video games to social media.   In fact, Twitter was the main attraction at SXSW 2007, winning a SXSW web award and gaining three times the users that it had the week before the festival.  The big winners this year include the unicorn and rainbows service Cornify, Gowalla, and knowledge engine Wolfram Alpha.

Many filmmakers avoid the pressure of a Hollywood or New York premiere, instead opting to present their films at the SXSW Film Conference and Festival.  It has grown tremendously since its inception, and is a rare festival where big studio features might be preceded by a micro-budget indie.   Previous screenings include The Aristocrats, V for Vendetta, Knocked Up, and The Hurt Locker.  2010′s big winners were Tiny Furniture and Brotherhood, while the SNL spin-off MacGruber has been getting some surprisingly decent reviews since premeiring in Austin on Monday.

Just about every indie band you could imagine is playing or has played sets this week in Austin, as well as some big names like Nas, The Walkmen, and Broken Social Scene.  As I’ve mentioned previously, SXSW is a tastemaking festival that can really put a band on the map, and we are expecting to hear big things from some of our favorite new bands like Best Coast, Local Natives, Sleigh Bells, Surfer Blood, and Gwar.
