Quick Hits

Posted by Patrick

Starting July 7th Pitchfork will gather-up 20 bloggers for a collective focused on DIY pop. Is this cool or is Pitchfork over-extending? Altered Zones is the spot to check in about a week.

Gorilla Vs. Bear is one of the twenty selected for Altered Zones and they’ve moved to a new home, adjust bookmarks accordingly.

I’m not typing out the inane title but you can stream all of Big Boi’s new album on his Myspace page.

How about some new M83?! Check out the extended version of “Black Hole.”

Adult Swim’s Singles Program is ulimately in the service of KIA sales which is okay if we keep getting cool tracks and a video like the one below for a remix of LCD Soundsystem’s “Drunk Girls.” Update: As much as we dislike sending you elsewhere the embed just isn’t working for us. Check out the clip at Stereogum.

The video for Julian Lynch’s “In New Jersey” works just fine and you can enjoy that below.

“Somewhere” (movie trailer)

Posted by Patrick

I’d say Scorsese but he can’t get away from the Stones, so who else these days can pick a pop soundtrack as well as Sofia Coppola? The trailer for “Somewhere” features perfect accompaniment in the form of The Strokes’ “I’ll Try Anything Once.”

Best of ACL Festival 2009 on Hulu

Posted by Patrick

Austin City Limits is a good festival though it can be a challenge to navigate what with conflicting show schedules, heat, no cell phone service, numerous allergens, and Dave Matthews Band fans (last year anyway). If any of the above felled you, or you didn’t go at all, Hulu is now streaming performances from a pretty good cross section of the bands that played last year. Lineup for 2010 drops May 18th and you can train your “Refresh” skills here.

The above is a good version of “Louisiana,” the Tape editors caught a rowdier version at Pitchfork ’06 when some of the guys from Man Man joined in on horns. You can see one of us in the video below. A gold star for the reader that guesses who it is.

David Byrne and Annie Clark

Posted by Patrick

If an Imelda Marcos concept album with Fatboy Slim isn’t eclectic enough for you, David Byrne is joining up with Annie Clark for a collaboration which features a brass ensemble, has no timetable for completion, and is at about eight songs so far. Byrne has a way of showing up everywhere these days, but still, this feels like a rather natural pairing. Byrne and Clark perform “Breathing” below:

While we’re on the topic of Byrne, you might do well to check out his excellent 2008 collaboration with Brian Eno, Everything That Happens Will Happen Today. This isn’t an official video for “Strange Overtones” but it’s pretty cool, and the song is great. Enjoy.

News Roundup

Posted by Patrick

The Besnard Lakes are Roaring drops on Tuesday (3/9) and if you can’t wait that long Spinner has the full album streaming for your listening pleasure. “Albatross” is still the fave, though footstomper “And This is What We Call Progress” gets good and proggy there at the end.

LCD Soundsystem has a yet untitled album due May 18th, good news for James Murphy fans thinking his soundtrack work and cameo in Greenberg would be it for the year.

Dark Night of The Soul will see an official release which is great but everyone has the album already.

Spoon will be on Letterman tonight. Set DVRs accordingly or check out the CBS website tomorrow.

News: Gorillaz

Posted by Patrick

Going far in redeeming himself  for the apparently execrable Cop Out, and let’s just say most of his filmography in the last decade, Bruce Willis chases down the band in this suitably cinematic clip for “Stylo.”

NPR is at it again and is streaming Plastic Beach in its entirety.

Expect our review of Plastic Beach on or around the release date, 3/8. We’ll keep you posted.

Album News: Karen Elson The Ghost Who Walks

Posted by Patrick

I’d make a nepotism crack but I’d rather not offend Jack White. Seriously though he has produced Karen Elson’s (his wife) debut solo album, titled The Ghost Who Walks and the sound is about what you’d expect and nothing spectacular. Enjoyment on this song and the full-length is largely going to be based on whether or not you care to take into account some of the more curious stories from White’s personal life. If so, a country-lite album from his model-wife stocked with foreboding lyrics in the same vein as those in “The Ghost Who Walks,” might be worth a spin or two, and maybe even make for an interesting footnote in White’s career.

Album News: Joanna Newsom: Have One On Me

Posted by Patrick

Have One on Me is out and the critical reception has been, to nobody’s surprise, quite good. If you are still on the fence about picking up the album, or just don’t have the money for it, head on over to NPR. The pledge-drivers are streaming the album in full for your listening pleasure. If you aren’t yet up on NPR as a source for your music needs, you need to go ahead and cut that out. Not only are they good for the occasional album streaming pre-release but they’ve been known to bag a few scoops here and there. The feature most worthy of your time is their live concert series wherein they offer high quality recordings of shows in-full–for free, just have to listen to a couple of commercials.

Beach House at The Interface Studio

Posted by Patrick

Could AOL stake a comeback with The Interface? Doubtful but their selections so far have been pretty solid, and the production is quality. Beach House is their latest featured artist. Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally perform four tracks off in-house fave/obsession Teen Dream. What’s most impressive so far is not only how strong the band sounds in live settings, but the tendency to apply a few subtle tweaks here and there, they sound just different enough to keep it interesting. Legrand alludes to touring as their livelihood and it shows, their performance works even though their stage presence is the guitarist seated and the singer behind a keyboard. We’ve got “Lover of Mine” for you here but recommend you check out the whole show.

Check back Friday for our look back at Devotion, the band’s 2008 album.
