N.E.R.D. – In Search Of… – What You Were Listening To 8 Years Ago

Posted by Steven

Having already compiled a lifetime achievement-worthy resume as songwriters and knob pushers by 2001, The Neptunes, or Pharrell Williams & Chad Hugo, along with rapper/singer Shay re-released their debut album as N.E.R.D. titled In Search Of…(this time with a live backing band) on March 12, 2002.  Blending many genres including funk, rap, rock, and electro, the album impressively won the Shortlist Music Prize in 2002, beating out The Avalanches, Doves, and The Flaming Lips, among others.  Though Pharrell’s lyrics were a little goofy and sometimes lacked the subtlety of a teenager’s journal entries, with track titles such as “Lapdance” and “Rock Star,” what the fuck did you expect?  The lyrics weren’t what you came for; it was the energy and inventive production in songs like “Things Are Getting Better” and “Stay Together” that made In Search Of… a standout record.  Following the album, The Neptunes continued producing every song on the planet.  Seriously, I hope you’ve got an hour to look at that list, it’s ridiculous.  N.E.R.D. have released two more albums, though neither gained the attention that In Search Of… did.  Their newest, titled Instant Gratification should be released sometime in 2010.  No video, but here’s a picture you can look at while listening to “Things Are Getting Better.”
