Arcade Fire + David Bowie – “Wake Up”

Posted by Patrick

Arcade Fire and Bowie team up to blow the doors off a stuffy industry gig. This is the band at their anthemic, emotive best.

Merge Records will release The Suburbs, Arcade Fire’s much-anticipated third album, on August 3rd.

The hits keep coming.  Ra Ra Riot play The Rev Room in Little Rock on Friday, October 29th.  Road trip is all I’m saying.  Their new album The Orchard will be released 8/24 via Barsuk.

In case you missed it, here’s the first single that we posted last week, “Boy.”

Black Mountain – “The Hair Song”

Black Mountain

Just as the quaalude and cough medicine crowd threaten to put us all to sleep, first-string classic-rock conjurers Black Mountain deliver a jolt to the system in the form of “The Hair Song,” the second track from forthcoming Wilderness Heart. Riffs, Amber Webber’s vibrato, and Stephen McBean’s mere presence all combine for a potent track that feels and sounds like rock and or roll.

Jagjaguwar will release Wilderness Heart on 9/13

Badly Drawn Boy – “In Safe Hands”(Demo)

Posted by Steven

Damon Gough isn’t necessarily hip or thrill-inducing these days, but releasing 2.5 classic albums over the years earns the dude a post pass from me.  You can catch more thoughts on those albums right here while you check out a demo version of the lead track off Badly Drawn Boy’s upcoming LP, It’s What I’m Thinking Pt. I. Simple and engaging make for good BDB, so I’m anxious to hear more.  Take a look at the tracklist below and get a free download of this demo here.  Would anyone like to see a Badly Drawn Boy comeback?

Tracklist

“In Safe Hands”
“The Order Of Things”
“Too Many Miracles”
“What Tomorrow Brings”
“I Saw You Walk Away”
“It’s What I’m Thinking”
“You Lied”
“A Pure Accident”
“This Electric”
“This Beautiful Ideas”

Strange video and similar to the clip for “Odessa” in that it recalls David Lynch, this time with odball dance numbers and a creepy madam.

Notable New Releases 7.27.10 (Best Coast, Menomena, Futurebirds, and More)

Posted by Steven

Best Coast – Crazy For You

Easily one of our most anticipated records of the year, after several listens Crazy For You lives up to the hype.  Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno make it sound so easy on their debut LP, blending 60′s girl-group harmonies with 90′s alt-rock riffs.  Cosentino’s simple lyrics, which occasionally border on silly, offer an earnest yet self-assured perspective on yearning and heartache.

Best Coast – “Boyfriend”

Best Coast – “When I’m With You”

Buy at Mexican Summer

Menomena – Mines

The exact opposite of the Best Coast record.  A challenging but ultimately rewarding listen, Mines finds the Portland experimental-rockers at their most ambitious.  The record is littered with inventive production and masterful musicianship, particularly on the sprawling, Weekend Mixed “TAOS” and the slow burning “Tithe.”

Menomena – “TAOS”

Buy at Barsuk

Futurebirds – Hampton’s Lullaby

This is what alt-country in 2010 should sound like, an eclectic mix of pedal steel, indie pop melodies, and four-part harmonies.

Futurebirds – “Johnny Utah”

Buy at Amazon via Autumn Tone

Seu Jorge and Almaz – S/T

No Bowie covers, but this time around we get the Brazilian singer/actor’s take on classics from Michael Jackson and Kraftwerk, among others.  This is Jorge’s first album with his newly formed band, Almaz.

Seu Jorge and Almaz – “Everybody Loves The Sunshine”

Buy at Now Again

Jaill – That’s How We Burn

Genuine rock n’ rollers from Milwaukee release their sure-to-be-breakout LP, their first on Sub Pop.

Jaill – “The Stroller”

Buy at Sub Pop

Miniature Tigers – Fortress

This Arizona/Brooklyn quartet’s second album features production from Chris Chu of The Morning Benders and Neon Indian, who produced the XMU favorite and lead single, “Gold Skull.”

Miniature Tigers – “Gold Skull”

Miniature Tigers – “Bullfighter Jacket”
